BARU ELT hosted the 11th session of its Language Talks Webinar Series with Prof. Dr. Yasemin Bayyurt from the University of Lleida and Boğaziçi University as the guest speaker. In her presentation, titled “Rethinking Disciplinary Literacies through the Lens of World Englishes and ELF in EMI Contexts,” she discussed how English is used in multilingual and multicultural academic settings and its implications for higher education. One of the key topics of the webinar was English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) awareness for teachers. Prof. Dr. Bayyurt emphasized that universities should acknowledge the multilingual reality of today’s world and support students in becoming effective communicators rather than expecting them to speak like native speakers. She also addressed the role of English-Medium Instruction (EMI) in universities and shared insights into the experiences of international students studying in Türkiye.

The webinar concluded with an interactive discussion session, during which participants exchanged ideas on multilingualism, English language teaching, and internationalization in higher education. The ELT Program thanks Prof. Dr. Bayyurt for her valuable contribution to the Language Talks Webinar Series.
